There has been a renewed sense of enthusiasm for USC freshman Husan Longstreet. Watching him work out, completing some passes, and working on various aspects in the gym has many Trojan fans that much more excited to watch him suit up and take a snap from out of the shotgun at the Coliseum.

As things stand now, coach Lincoln Riley has made it clear that Jayden Maiava is the starting quarterback heading into the season. Even so, anything can happen in this sport. While Maiava may be the starter for now, any number of circumstances could see Longstreet end up taking significant snaps this season.

Part of what will make it difficult for Longstreet to win the job outright is a lot of what caused some of the troubles for Maiava last year. Entering into the first year in a system and being expected to perform right away is asking a lot of any player. In the case of Maiava, the current QB1 did enter USC with some prior collegiate experience. For Longstreet, 2025 will be his first year as a collegiate athlete.

Based on the words from coach Riley during the past spring camp, there is something of a gap between the two QBs at the moment. Even if it were to become a closer competition toward the beginning of the season, coach Riley would likely still lean on the option with direct experience in the system and who is a little older.

Setting himself up for successful USC career

It is often wise to not put too much on someone too early and allow for them to learn and develop behind the scenes. Not that Longstreet wouldn't be able to handle the responsibilities. By all accounts, it appears as if he is doing everything the right way. Only, increasingly, there are more players who are seeing the value and benefit of not playing right away. When they do see the field, they are then able to fully hit the ground running.

Either way, the day Longstreet starts in his first game for USC, many Trojan fans will be beyond ecstatic.
