Running back Heisman Trophy winner could be in the works at USC

It has been since 2015 when a running back last won the Heisman Trophy. Reggie Bush, of course, earned the recognition while with USC in 2005. That should help to show how infrequently a non-quarterback wins the award. Granted, last season saw Travis Hunter win the Heisman as a two-way player. Even despite the type of year that Ashton Jeanty had, it wasn't enough for most voters to consider giving him the nod.

That is something that could change, however. Or at least, it is something that could see a renewed spark from USC to the point where there should be some legitimate excitement about potentially seeing a Trojan running back in the discussion at a minimum.

For 2025, Waymond Jordan and Eli Sanders will be in the backfield. To this point, they are not as nationally known as some of the others at the position. Jordan, in particular, is someone to keep an eye on, as he is expected to be featured a lot during the upcoming season, possibly as an every-down back.

Looking ahead, the pair of RBs entering campus from the 2026 class could very well generate instant excitement and buzz in terms of what is possible and how high their ceiling can be.

A lot of potential from future USC backfield

Deshonne Redeaux and Shahn Alston have the talent to be high-achievers at the collegiate level. Of course, placing any type of unreasonable expectations too soon, before either is officially enrolled as a student, would be unfair. Looking ahead, it is something to keep in the back of one's mind.

The running back nowadays can be featured just as much in the passing game as in the running game. Having the all-around ability is absolutely needed in today's game. That should help to speak to just how much potential Redeaux and Alston have and why, by the time 2027 and 2028 roll around, it should not come as a surprise to anyone if either were on the preseason watchlist for the nation's top award.
