Next USC offensive line options after unjust DJ Wingfield judicial decision

It truly is a shame that the NCAA could not extend the same latitude that has been granted for so many others to DJ Wingfield, who would have likely been the starting Trojan left guard. It is now known, however, that the Purdue transfer will not be able to practice, much less see the field, in 2025.

There is the potential of his ultimately being granted eligibility, but the only remaining route would have to come by a lengthy appeals process. Considering a judge is not likely to expedite the process, his ability to play this upcoming season has seen the door shut.

This does, however, leave the chance for someone else to be able to step up and fill in the role. It goes without saying that the offensive line is arguably the most important position group for the Trojans. Now knowing that the projected starter in Wingfield will not be able to help out USC this year, this does provide opportunity for others to have an increased role.

An aspect that immediately takes a hit is the offensive line depth. Essentially losing a starter makes it so that there will be fewer bodies for coach Lincoln Riley to choose from in a pivotal fourth year for the Trojan HC.

Possibilities for USC

The option that USC could now potentially explore is that of moving Tobias Raymond to left guard and then placing Justin Tauanuu as the starting right tackle. On the other hand, Micah Banuelos could be someone for the Trojans to give the nod to while then having Raymond stay at right tackle.

In either event, it is a shame for Wingfield in particular that this update came so close to the season beginning. For USC, this is far from a hopeless situation, as the Trojans have a couple of different avenues to explore to help ensure that Jayden Maiava stays upright this season.
