There can often be seemingly multiple approaches that can lead to positive results. Take USC legend coach Pete Carroll and coach Nick Saban, for instance. The two, on the surface, could be viewed as opposites in terms of how they went about their business as the head coach of a football team.
While speaking on the Blue Guys podcast that features Alex Smith, coach Dan Quinn discussed with the panel his takeaways from the two coaching greats now that their time at the college level has passed.
Coach Quinn spoke on the personality differences. On the surface, there wouldn't be much of a comparison between coach Carroll and coach Saban. The current Washington Commanders HC doesn't quite see it that way.
According to him, throughout both programs with the two in charge, there is uniform continuity and a known collective drive to approach all aspects toward winning football.
This ability to keep the same message and then continue to hold people to the needed standard is ultimately what allowed for the coaches to find their success in college and for coach Carroll in the pros. The track record speaks for itself. It has to be said that to many, coach Saban, is seen as more gruff and no-nonsense (think of the VRBO commercial). By contrast, coach Carroll is more 'fun' and easygoing.
When it comes to business and getting the job done, however, coach Carroll equally ensures that any program under his control is aligned and meets the needed input that is required each day.
Comparing to coach Lincoln Riley now at USC
The word that came to mind for coach Quinn was 'authenticity' in the clip. Either 'different approach' worked because both men stayed true to themselves while maintaining the same principles and drive. Looking at the current USC program, this is an aspect that coach Lincoln Riley is actively attempting to also have breathe through Trojan facilities.
When looking at the positive steps and improvements that have been made, especially, as coach Quinn would say, coach Riley does not have to be anyone else. As long as he maintains and builds the values, he too will find success.
