Everyone will have something different that they are looking for in a quarterback. USC coach Lincoln Riley is someone who can make a lot happen with seemingly anyone. He too has stated some traits that he likes to see from someone who will touch the ball on every snap of the offense.
It is this approach that will have to matter when evaluating QBs. How someone potentially will fit and be able to execute coach Riley's system has to be the main criterion. With that in mind, after hearing some of the latest praise in regard to Trojan commit Jonas Williams, there is a lot to like about what USC will be having on campus soon enough.
Speaking at the OT7 Finals, 247Sports' Tom Loy and Brandon Huffman spoke on what they have seen to this point with Williams throughout all of the spring exhibitions and showcases.
The number one quality that kept being brought up was poise. For both of them, Williams' ability to stay even-keeled and just make the right reads and throws has allowed him to stand out from the rest of the quarterbacks that he has been competing against. That is something that is not always seen, particularly among younger quarterbacks.
Looking ahead for Williams at USC
During their discussion, the panel mentioned how others will try to force the action or will attempt to overdramatize the degree of difficulty with their throw. For Williams, it is all about keeping up the offensive production and finding ways to get the ball to his playmakers.
Projecting forward, this is a highly encouraging sign from the incoming class of 2026 Trojan quarterback. Too often, players can be caught up in trying to make a highlight throw on each down or just in general trying to do too much. Particularly in coach Riley's system, with the stable of weapons that will be available, as long as the protection in front of him holds up, if Williams is able to maintain this similar demeanor that was described, he will be able to find a lot of success at USC.
