Day Two of USC’s fall training camp for the 2012 season wrapped up late Tuesday night. At the end of the night, head coach Lane Kiffin told the media that there were “no big surprises for day two”, which, this early in the game, is a good thing. Per Scott Enyeart, he also said this gem:

For the record, Kiffin does get to cast a vote this season since the Trojans are bowl eligible. For a coach trying to keep his team from buying into the hype, this was exactly the thing he needed to say.

Here are some highlights from the practice:

  • CKhaled Holmes and WR George Farmer are still out with minor injuries, but DE Wes Horton is back. It would seem that Farmer and his ability to stay healthy, which he has yet to do in his time at SC, will be a developing storyline as well. Robert Woods got in some practice time, wearing a yellow no-contact jersey.
  • WR Nelson Agholor reportedly had a good practice and looked solid in his routes.
  • Kiffin said backup running back DJ Morgan has improved, and is “handling everything well”. Morgan was slated to back of Curtis McNeal, but with the introduction of Silas Redd to the Trojan offense, Morgan’s use is still yet to be determined.
  • DE JR Tavai, who has stepped up with the 1st team in the absence of Devon Kennard, is apparently holding it down, per Inside Troy.
  • For the second day in a row, CB Isiah Wiley and LB Marquis Simmons did not practice, as they are waiting to receive academic clearance. Grades won’t be posted for one or two weeks according to Coach Kiff, so they likely will be held out until then.Brian Baucham, who was out yesterday for “unspecified reasons”, is still out and is now being listed as having a concussion.
  • Before camp began, Kiffin noted that LT Aundrey Walker had lost a lot of weight, but that it may have even been too much. Walker himself today said he currently weighs 304 pounds and needs to get to 310-315. Kiffin also praised a bunch of second year Trojans, namely Walker, K Andre Heidari, FB Soma Vainuku, and TE Junior Pomee.
  • FB Soma Vainuku got in a handful of carries during scrimmage time. His development in camp will be an interesting one to follow, as USC has suffered from a lack of fullback present since Stanley Havili left.
  • Randall Telfer, always the character, tweeted this glass half-full type message about a hyperextended thumb that he suffered:

Practice resumes Wednesday but in the afternoon this time, beginning at 3:15.
