Yes, it is frustrating to see USC lose in the same way against the better teams. For anyone who did not watch the game but only looked at the final score, they could have likely have easily predicted the way in which the Trojans lost the game.
It is still important to remember that it took a walk-off field goal for Illinois to beat USC at home. This was the case despite the Fighting Illini run game having its way on the field against what had been, to that point, a formidable unit.
Even so, there are important aspects to consider when evaluating how the latest loss transpired.
Kamari Ramsey was noticeably unavailable. That alone is a significant piece of the defense that was clearly missed against Illinois.
Offensively, the run game continues to impress. The passing game is about as good as any in the nation. While the connection between Jayden Maiava and Makai Lemon continues to excel, it is still important to look at the role Ja'Kobi Lane plays when on the field.
The wideout is still not at 100% and is only able to play limited snaps. One has to imagine that when he is able to play regular minutes, USC will be able to generate at least a handful of first downs.
Important aspects to consider for USC
His full inclusion alone will help to keep the Trojan defense off the field that much longer. That aspect alone could easily end up proving to be the difference between losing by a possession and having the needed more secured lead for the rest of Big Ten play.
There will also need to be an overall increase in mental toughness and perseverance. While the players individually may possess these qualities, as a whole, the USC team has not been able to display these attributes in the critical matchups.
