A lot of major shifts are happening for USC women's basketball. Avery Howell has transferred to Washington. Kayleigh Heckel is in the transfer portal. The timeline of JuJu Watkins' return from her ACL injury is unknown at this time. Depending on the person, severity, and recovery process, returning to full health can take anywhere from six months to a full year.
Fans of the program saw a major sign of encouragement while watching the Nike Hoop Summit. Five-star Trojan signee Jazzy Davidson put on a strong showcase for Team USA. Her talent stood out in the all-star-like event. And while she is considered the third-best prospect of the recruiting class, she made a clear case as to why that might even be too low.
Regardless of that aspect, it was very evident to see why head coach Lindsay Gottlieb has wanted to have Davidson join the Women of Troy. Between her length, vision, and overall skill set, the listed guard can impact the game in a multitude of ways at both ends.
What's, furthermore, clear while watching her play is how unselfish and team-centered she is in her approach. While speaking with reporters about some of the uncertain aspects at USCWBB, the high school senior gave the perfect response that fans will appreciate. When asked about her potential role for the 2025-2026 season, she replied, as shared by @m685fromthewomb on X:
"I really don't know, but whatever they need me to do to win, I'm happy to do it."
When watching her play, it's clear that this type of response is very much reflective of how she conducts herself on the court. Looking to pass first on a lot of possessions and get the ball out to the right option, particularly in transition, not too much will really affect her game.
Great cornerstone for USC women's basketball
Depending on how the rest of the roster shakes out, she could be asked to be more of a primary scoring option. While the five-star athlete excels at setting others up, she also demonstrated her willingness and ability to put the ball in the basket herself. Particularly off turnovers, her ability to get out ahead of everyone should be an issue from opposing transition defenses.
Whether as the point guard or on the wing, Davidson just looks to make the right plays, and if her teammates are in a better position, then she'll find a way to get them the ball. Yes, she will only be a freshman come the fall, and it would be unfair to put too many unreasonable expectations on her. That being said, it's hard to not get excited over the prospect of watching her take the court in the Cardinal and Gold for USC women's basketball.
