Looking at the backside of any defense can determine a lot about a football team. USC has two great options at safety. From the school that produced Ronnie Lott and Troy Polamalu, that position and the Trojans go hand-in-hand.
TheĀ ROC BOYS FOOTBALL X page is a group from Rochester, New York, that regularly comments and will publicly evaluate teams and players throughout college football. When taking the best safeties into account for the upcoming season, they ranked Bishop Fitzgerald and Kamari Ramsey as the fourth-best safety duo currently in all of CFB.
There will certainly be time for the pair to climb up the rankings and become a consensus top three in all of the media landscape. For now, while simply talking about and anticipating what will happen during the late days of June, putting the two at No. 4 seems appropriate for the time being.
Being lower on a list that has Caleb Downs sitting at the top, for example, is not a slight by any stretch. Even so, they have earned and deserve the respect of being placed in a tier over the likes of Oregon and Notre Dame at this point.
There were a lot of players on this coach D'Anton Lynn defense that have since moved on. Trojan fans will be familiar with what Kamari Ramsey can do at the position. He is one of the few carryovers from last year. NC State transfer Bishop Fitzgerald also comes with a lot of experience. Needless to say, this should be a strong safety room that can impose its will on opposing offenses.
Stabilizing force for USC defense
Between both USC players, there is a lot of production and big-play abilities and potential on each down. While many are expecting this team to give a sizeable uptick in the wins department, there aren't too many concerns surrounding the back of this Trojan defense for a reason.
Anyone doubting what this unit can do and how this defense will be able to execute just has not paid enough attention to Ramsey and Fitzgerald. That will change soon enough.
