There is something of a new feel around the USC football program. After a couple of seasons of regression in terms of the win total, the Trojans are expecting to put up a bigger fight. Now with a full year of experience in the Big Ten, coach Lincoln Riley has done well to address some of the aspects that have led to losses, particularly last season.

The trenches have especially been a point of emphasis by coach Riley.

More importantly, the mental approach from the Trojans does appear to have shifted. Now with some of the latest staff additions, practices appear to be more intense, and there is a stronger sense of urgency and seriousness when it comes to preparation.

With this in mind, barring something completely surprising, fans will not be able to find out too much else about this program until a few games into Big Ten play. The opening non-conference opponents are Missouri State and Georgia Southern. Then, USC will play Purdue and Michigan State to open up conference play.

Change of fortune for USC

There should be a good deal of comfort in the Trojans' ability to get the job done and start the year off 4-0. Granted, this is competitive sports. It is unknown what can happen anytime anyone steps foot on the field. It would be quite concerning, though, if USC were to drop one of these earlier matchups. This would become even more true if the Trojans end up losing another close one late, harkening back to how a lot of 2024 ended up unfolding.

With a lot of the changes and shifts in the program, however, the Trojans are in a better position to avoid losing in the same manner. While many are expecting USC to go 4-0 to start the year, these first few games will be hugely telling and will set the tone for the rest of 2025.
