Another Big Ten showdown has come and gone and, unfortunately, it is the USC Trojans who are once again left trying to figure out how to come out on top. Sitting at 1-3 overall in conference play this year, the Trojans have lost three games on essentially the final play of the game.
However, moral victories aren't what USC football has been built upon. Instead, the Trojans expect to compete at the highest levels of the sport.
That's not going to happen this year, though. Saturday's 33-30 loss to Penn State was essentially an elimination game for head coach Lincoln Riley's team in 2024 as far as the Big Ten title and the College Football Playoff go.
Of course, the way that this game unfolded had to be especially disappointing to the Trojans who saw a 20-6 halftime lead disappear into the Southern California air. Along the way, just about everything that could go wrong for USC did go wrong making the latest defeat that much tougher to swallow.
"Yeah, shoot, they all hurt," QB Miller Moss said. "This one especially was excruciating just in the manner that it happened. I think the flip side of that is we've got a really, really good locker room filled with really great people and really great coaches that's going to continue to stay together and go on a run this back half of the season. That's the No. 4 team in the country, so what does that make us?"
The loss was a huge topic of conversation on social media after the game as fans and experts alike took the opportunity to share their thoughts on the Trojan's misfortune. Here's a look at some of the most interesting reactions from X.
#USC was out of the national conversation playoff-wise by late October last year. This year, it’s out by mid-October. Not good enough.

We blew this one. Considering where we were after the first half, terrible loss. Collective effort contributed to it. Offense, defense and special teams. Playoff hopes are gone. No clue where we go from here. Lincoln Riley still has yet to prove he can win these types of games.…

On its final drive of regulation, USC had the ball at Penn State's 49 with 1:47 left and got off three more plays (ending in an INT).

That's malpractice.
Final: Penn State beats #USC 33-30 in overtime. That’s a tough one for the Trojans, who didn’t handle the final few minutes well at all and that is ultimately on Lincoln Riley, who is now 11-10 in his last 21 games

Woof. Lincoln Riley is not going to allow any reporters to ask any questions after this game.

I’m not gonna lie, USC just got absolutely hosed. Penn State got away with two PI’s in OT on that first possession. One of the 2 have to be called. Man that’s bad.

The was the worst series of coaching I’ve ever seen in my entire life by USC.

USC with no regard for time management 😅

USC running out the clock at midfield when the game is tied is beyond head scratching. Where is the urgency to win the game?
— Phil Tortora (@PhilipTortora) October 12, 2024
What the hell was that clock management by Lincoln Riley and USC?

USC is guilty of some of the worst clock management I have ever seen. If they lose this game, Riley is going to take a beating.

Just an absolutely sickening loss by USC. They had it almost wrapped up in regulation until the pick, and then Penn State got away with TWO penalties that weren’t called in OT. But it’s hard to blame the refs when you should have gotten the job done before that.

Very suspect USC/Penn State game NCAA. You might want to do some investigating. A lot of penalties were not called. #NCAA #penalties #usc #PennState #CBS
