Oregon offensive and defensive coordinators seem to not know their place, and as a result have taken major shots at USC football this week.
First, Oregon OC Kenny Dillingham said that when you think of west coast football, you think of Oregon football. Yes, he said you think of Oregon football and their zero trophies over the blueblood USC program.
Now, Oregon DC Tosh Lupoi directed his shots right at Lincoln Riley.
The context of this is that Riley's 2018 Oklahoma team played Alabama in the Orange Bowl (College Football Playoff). Lupoi was the Defensive Coordinator and Outside Linebackers Coach for the Tide then. Bama won that contest 34-45.
The Oregon coaching staff continues to give USC football and Lincoln Riley lots of bulletin board material this offseason.
I have no idea why of all people to talk about USC Football Head Coach Lincoln Riley, Lupoi is the one. He beat Riley when he played him, which I guess is nice, but he's acting like he was the head coach of that team and had just as much of an impact on his team as Riley had on his. Lupoi embarrassed himself by pretending that HE beat Riley, when in reality he wasn't even the head coach, and hasn't even been a head coach anywhere.
There's nothing wrong with being a national championship-winning D Coordinator, but to use that as ammo on a HEAD coach who has won a Power 5 conference in five of his six years as a head coach is laughable. Especially when the ONE year Riley didn't win his conference, he still finished inside the top 10.
Unfortunately for Lupoi, he will not have Nick Saban above him in the coaching ladder at Oregon, like he did for years at Alabama. Our head coach is significantly better than another guy like Lupoi in Dan Lanning who has never been a head coach in his entire life. It won't be so easy for Lupoi against Riley moving forward, so I'm not quite sure why he fed the beast with this trash talk.
And, I mean, I really hope he does take his national championship ring out with him to recruit. After all, he certainly hasn't had very much success in building the roster this offseason. Oregon has just the 22nd overall class (247Sports), while Riley and USC have a top 10 class (247Sports) despite not even being in the top 100 before Riley took over.
Lupoi needs to hold onto as many 'wins' over Riley as he can.
