Lincoln Riley breaks exciting transfer portal news for USC football
By Evan Desai
Lincoln Riley just began spring practice for USC football earlier on Tuesday, but also broke some very important and thrilling news for after spring football. Riley announced that he's still somehow not done adding transfers this offseason, and that there's not only going to be more players added, but a lot of them.
Riley announced this to the world on Trojans Live, and it throws it back to when Riley teased a lot more great things to come for USC football on Colin Cowherd's FS1 show, 'The Herd.' We knew this was coming, but it hadn't quite showed up just yet. SC hasn't brought in many transfers as of late, and has actually lost their lead in the portal rankings to former SC Head Coach Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss.
SC is still in second, and still top 10 in terms of their overall class (recruiting + transfer). Now that Riley is planning on adding through the portal after spring, expect those rankings to jump up. We all remember from past years that LOTS of important transfers happen after the spring. Spring ball is great for teams, but it also exposes issues that certain players will have with their squads, drawing them to look for better fits.
USC football is going to go on a transfer spree when their spring football is over.
On the flip side, it certainly is possible that USC football is going to lose players currently on the roster once spring ball ends. Don't be surprised if that happens. The positive aspect of this situation, however, is that the transfer portal adds that Riley has brought in so far have all upgraded this roster. The only low-impact players that Riley has brought in are depth pieces that he still really needed anyway.
He's already shown that he knows how to bring in the right transfers, so if players leave, expect him to find the right replacements. So far, some of those major upgrades include five star transfer (and the most anticipated transfer in college football history) Caleb Williams, four star transfer and former strong receiving target of Williams' in Mario Williams, elite four star RB Travis Dye, up-and-coming standout four star transfer corner Latrell McCutchin, and freak talent and four star WR1 transfer in Brenden Rice.
If Riley gets his hands on even more of these type of impact players, the roster is going to be straight LOADED as the Trojans enter the 2022 season. With Riley at the helm, it's always possible. He had already proven himself as a recruiter and transfer portal genius many years ago.
