Caleb Williams has officially won the Heisman Trophy. Anyone who's been paying attention knew it would happen, as he was easily the best college football player in America this season. Williams not only threw for 37 touchdowns (tied for first in America), but he also ran for 10 more. He only threw four total interceptions.
He not only threw for 4,075 passing yards (fourth in America), but he also ran for 372 more. He was incredible; averaging 9.1 pass yards per attempt (sixth in America) and 10.3 adjusted pass yards per attempt (fifth in America). His season was about as good as it can get, and so was his Heisman Trophy acceptance speech.
His speech came before past Heisman Trophy winners, and the three finalists that came with him. Those three finalists that Williams won the Heisman Trophy over were TCU QB Max Duggan, Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud, and Georgia QB Stetson Bennett (listed in order of the place that the three other finalists finished behind Williams).
The speech couldn't have been much better from the eighth USC player to win the Heisman Trophy. There were many top moments to choose from, but the five best were some moments that in particular will never be forgotten.
The 5 best moments from Caleb Williams' Heisman Trophy acceptance speech are as follows:
No. 5 best moment from Caleb Williams' Heisman Trophy acceptance speech: The College Football Playoff joke
Caleb Williams won the Heisman Trophy over every player in the country, but was the only one of the four finalists who is not going to the College Football Playoff. He made a joke about it during his speech:
Not only was it a hilarious joke, but also a classy nod to the other great players that were there with him. The Heisman Trophy would mean nothing if it weren't being won over other great players, and there most certainly were many other great players in college football this year. Williams paying his respects to the ones who competed with him this season was great.
No. 4 best moment from Caleb Williams' Heisman Trophy acceptance speech: Knowing this is just the beginning
Caleb Williams made it very clear throughout his speech that he was not satisfied with just a Heisman Trophy. He routinely mentioned that his job as the USC Quarterback was not done. That means everything, as it shows that he's about as far from a team player as it gets. The great individual award in college football is the Heisman Trophy. Williams has already proven himself.
He clearly wants to accomplish more, however, for his teammates to be able to experience this type of high themselves. He will be back for his junior year next season, and he clearly has success and progress during that season on his mind.
No. 3 best moment from Caleb Williams' Heisman Trophy acceptance speech: Thanking Lincoln Riley and his wife
Not only did Caleb Williams thank Lincoln Riley during his Heisman Trophy acceptance speech, but he also thanked Riley's wife. Again, Williams made this speech very much not about himself, but also everyone else who was a part of his journey.
The fact that he went as far as naming Riley's wife means that he is indeed grateful to EVERYONE who assisted in his journey; not even just he, his teammates, and his coaches. Williams has everybody in mind, and wanted to make sure he gave EVERYONE their flowers. It was an incredibly selfless speech.
No. 2 best moment from Caleb Williams' Heisman Trophy acceptance speech: The motivational closing
At the end of Caleb Williams' Heisman Trophy acceptance speech, he talked about all the setbacks he faced growing up in his football career, and let everyone know that if they're ever in that situation, they can climb out of that adversity themselves. It served as a reminder about the type of adversity that Williams faced even in just this season alone.
Williams transferred from an 11-2 team to a 4-8 team this past offseason, when he went from Oklahoma to USC. To make this uncertain move as a sophomore and still trying to find one's way as a player is a risk. Sure enough, he made the right choice, as SC finished 11-2 this year en route to a Caleb Williams Heisman Trophy while OU went 6-6.
No. 1 best moment from Caleb Williams' Heisman Trophy acceptance speech: His tribute to his offensive line
Caleb Williams not only brought his whole USC Offensive Line to his Heisman Trophy Ceremony, but had them all stand and call them out by name during the speech. He truly feels a lot of gratitude for his bodyguards up front at the line of scrimmage who protected him this year.
It's not often that anyone sees a QB bring his whole O-Line unit, let alone shout them out by name in a speech and have them all stand. It goes to show that Williams may be the best player in college football but nothing means more to him than his brothers on the team, as well as anyone else who contributed to his journey as the top player in America.
