There are certain figures in sports history who truly transcend any on-field or on-the-court aspects. For USC basketball coach George Raveling is someone whose impact transcends any Xs and Os or final score lines. A Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer and College Basketball Hall of Famer, coach Raveling also achieved great heights in his profession.

What he meant, though, in terms of important societal issues and as a trailblazer, is even more important and admirable.

As shared by the X account of the former Trojan coach, coach Raveling passed away following a battle with cancer at the age of 88.

Following his playing career at Villanova in the late 50s, coach Raveling took to the sidelines as an assistant at his alma mater. He then took the job at Maryland, becoming the first African American coach in the ACC. From there he earned the chance to be the head coach at Washington State and Iowa before coming to USC.

To have a 31-year span in which he was on the sidelines at a time when opportunities were only beginning to open up for African Americans speaks to the dedication and determination of coach Raveling. This is particularly true when considering that he was overall a late-comer to the sport. Yet, he managed to leave an incredible mark on basketball and helped to pave the way for minorities through his example.

Also aware of the many social issues that were taking place during the historical era, he was present at the Lincoln Memorial when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous 'I Have a Dream' speech. Coach Raveling ended up being the owner of the original copy from the orator and decided to donate it to Villanova despite significant offers for the artifact.

Great accomplishments as the USC HC

While at USC, coach Raveling led the Trojans to four postseason berths. Two of the appearances were in the NCAA Tournament in 1991 and 1992. Unfortunately for him, a car crash resulted in an early retirement from the sidelines. He still remained connected to the game as Director for International Basketball for Nike and published two books as well as being a commentator.

Coach Raveling efforts and diligence in the face of adversity continue to inspire. For USC fans, his efforts while in Troy in particular stand out and continue to garner a great deal of appreciation.
