There is a lot that takes place in college sports now. Monday saw something odd occur that is becoming all the more common during transfer portal season. Recently committed to USC, Kezza Giffa announced his intention to join the program less than a week ago.
As shared by MinerTalk host Adrian Broaddus, Giffa posted a message on Instagram in which he thanked the Trojan program for the hospitality but said that he would be reopening his recruiting again.
It is unknown what may have caused him to seemingly shift from being intent on coming to Los Angeles to now looking to explore other options instead. In the post, Giffa shared that he was looking for the best fit for him on and off the court.
This news is all the more interesting with former UTEP assistant coach Earl Boykins joining the USC coaching staff. Giffa played in El Paso while the former NBA guard was on the sidelines himself. What once seemed like an ideal match and type of reunion.
At the time it was coach Boykins' first year at UTEP, and the 2021-2022 season was Giffa's lone year as a Miner. In any event, the current player is opting to further navigate the NCAA landscape and find what he will view as a better-fitting home.
This is part of the norm for USC and all programs throughout the nation
There have been some decommitments and transfers out from USC. That is far from an indictment on the effort of coach Eric Musselman and this staff, however. When looking around, all programs face similar difficulty in holding on to players, even after their commitment is announced.
What coach Musselman has proven while at USC, though, is that once someone makes that decision to no longer wish to be a part of the program, he has an excellent ability to find someone who will fit the scheme and what they are looking for in a student-athlete.
