Following the lopsided USC victory, the Trojans are looking to have something of a repeat performance against Georgia Southern. Week 1 saw the team have a well-rounded and impressive game, even without some important pieces, particularly on defense.
The Trojans, as disclosed by team reporter Keely Eure, will see cornerback Chasen Johnson return this week. A transfer from UCF, the secondary player is someone who will add more depth to that position group and is slated to see plenty of playing time in 2025.
This is a team that will need all hands on deck at some point in the season. Although the opening portion is favorable for USC, by the time the full stretch of Big Ten play arrives, injuries will start to pile up, and different players will be needed in order to remain competitive against the conference's best teams.
Johnson is someone who enters the program with significant snaps under his belt already. For a defensive unit that is under coach D'Anton Lynn's second year in charge, the Trojans are looking for people like Johnson to solidify themselves as a regular contributor.
Getting early playing time against a team that USC should realistically comfortably beat by a couple of scores is important.
Helpful for USC early-on
Obviously, unlike the NFL, college football teams can often use the non-conference games as a form of offseason. Yes, the games count toward the record, but it is recognized that the winner is typically not in jeopardy more times than not.
Still, getting reps together and seeing live action against a different team, even if there is a gap in skill level, is incredibly valuable. Johnson being able to come back from injury in time for the game against the Eagles, particularly if the game ends up unfolding in a similar way as the Trojan win against the Bears, is something that could help pay dividends down the road later for USC.
