The partnership between Abbott and the Big Ten is easily one of the best investments of time and energy that is being put to good use toward a positive cause. The 'We Give Blood' drive aims to use the vast platform of college football to address a real need in society.

While USC fans are gearing up for the Michigan State game and the rest of the conference schedule, the Trojans are engaged in another form of competition among the rest of the Big Ten fan bases.

Already performing better than what resulted from last year, USC fans can contribute to the Trojan total by donating blood and registering the blood donation for the Cardinal and Gold.

USC outperforming last year's tally

The Big Ten website provides all of the needed information, such as where the nearest centers are and how to ensure that the donation ends up being counted for USC. Currently in 15th, the Trojans are well within striking distance to leapfrog a couple of the other Big Ten fan bases.

While there are monetary rewards and incentives for the schools, more importantly, this initiative saves lives.

To this point, the cause has already seen over 18,000 donations as a result of the Abbott and Big Ten push to increase the number of people willing to donate blood.

To put it in perspective, that is estimated to save over 55,000 lives. It is never known what medical procedures will require blood or when such instances will take place. There is, however, a national shortage among blood centers. This is what makes this friendly competition so great. By pairing people's love of college sports, there is an increased emphasis and awareness on doing something that has a noticeable and tangible impact on one's own community.
