A lot of the discussion in the USC receiver room is centered around Ja'Kobi Lane and Makai Lemon. As it should. Those are two of the better WRs in all of college football. Someone who is likely to turn heads as a true freshman is Corey Simms.
A native from the state of Missouri, he chose the Trojans over the Tigers and also had interest from Penn State. For Simms, part of the draw was coming to USC to join coach Lincoln Riley. He knows what this offense can look like when things get rolling, and he knows that QBU has to also involve heavy involvement for wide receivers.
While coach Riley's system is inherently quarterback-friendly, the signal caller also needs someone to throw the ball to. And in the coaches' air raid offense, that happens early and often. Now in Los Angeles, looking to earn a spot as high as possible on the depth chart, Simms joined not only for the possibility of what his numbers can look like in LA but also for the draw of what this staff is building in LA.
Part of what is afforded to student-athletes is the opportunity to come to campus early. Joining spring camp and experiencing life as a freshman starting in January, while foregoing the final part of the high school year, allows for the process to make the collegiate jump to begin that much sooner.
Good first impressions from USC WR
Early glimpses from what has been seen during practice indicate that Simms will vie for significant minutes early. He is someone who has seen a number of different packages as a WR in his high school days. When he receives the ball, regardless of how, it's clear that the burst that he has can be a major asset for coach Riley to potentially turn to early come the start of the season.
Already someone who looks crisp when running routes, Simms is currently fighting for a WR3 spot. Even if a deserving teammate wins out for that honor on the roster, Trojan fans should be primed to see the wideout make something of an immediate impact in his first year with USC.
