Coming to USC opens doors in a way that is the envy of other schools. For Deshonne Redeaux, staying home and joining the Trojans was a decision that he knows he'll be grateful for for the rest of his life. Right now, the four-star signee is focused on football and focusing on doing his part to help out the offense.
Beyond his upcoming freshman year and when he eventually moves on, with the NFL as a realistic possibility, he knows that being a part of the Trojan network will pay off in ways that he can't even see or necessarily define at the moment.
Speaking with the hosts on the Brown Bag Mornings show, part of the Power 106 FM programming, the running back shared a lot about what has led him to this point and what he hopes to continue to accomplish.
While sharing his Kendrick Lamar Super Bowl announcement inspiration for his Trojan decision announcement, Redeaux shared what being a member of the USC community means to him. Being as talented as he is, the RB had a number of offers and interest from other programs. The likes of Georgia and Michigan attempted to persuade him to line up in their backfields after all.
Knowing the limited nature of being an athlete and the running clock of being able to produce, particularly as a back, Redeaux wanted to best position himself for all facets of his career, beyond the football field. For now, his focus is on his athletics. He used the term "all ball" when describing his current priorities. Knowing the finite nature of Division I and eventually pro-level play gives a feel from the Trojan signee of knowing that he has to give it his all for football now, while this opportunity is still available for him.
Part of wearing the Cardinal and Gold involves knowing what it can bring after hanging up the cleats for the last time. Until that day, however, Redeaux wants to make the most of competing in the Big Ten and working with his teammates to compile wins for the program.
It can be a delicate balance. It oftentimes can take a while for people in any walk of life to figure their path out for themselves. For high-caliber recruits, a lot is asked of them early, and teenagers are often asked to grow up fast and make lasting decisions.
Choosing USC was about more than only wearing the Trojans uniform
Redeaux spoke on his thought process and how he balances the multitude of aspects that are a part of his life, including what ultimately led him to join forces with coach Lincoln Riley. During the show, he shared:
"When you got to look at it is, that football is going to come to an end one day and you got to have a backup plan. So you got to see more than just playing ball, but ball's always the first option."
Seeing this level of planning, appreciation, and ability to live in the moment while keeping an eye on the future is impressive. A lot of people struggle to juggle these aspects. Redeaux is only a freshman, and there will be a lot of new challenges that he will face this fall. If this interview is at all telling, he'll be able to navigate all obstacles that stand in his way.
