During his first year away from USC as a pro, Caleb Williams was forced to overcome a lot of the Chicago Bears' shortcomings. The franchise has since cleaned house, and coach Ben Johnson is in charge.
Through the opening months as the new head coach, the former Detroit Lions' offensive coordinator has gotten to know Williams. With a couple more practices together and some tape to look at, coach Johnson spoke on what he is currently seeing from his quarterback.
From the sound of it, the Bears' head coach is beginning to fully appreciate what Trojan fans have known for a long time. Williams is an incredible talent. If he is even halfway set up in a position to succeed, Williams will find a way to make a play.
This is the NFL, though. Compared to college, roster changes and using the draft to get the right players to fit the system can take more of a scenic route. Even so, there is a degree of optimism that some of the additions, plus the carryovers with coach Johnson in the building, will be able to show more for Chicago's efforts by the end of the season.
How to best help Williams can be a balancing act. The aspect of giving the Projan more support is a universal known, particularly on the offensive line. From there, coach Johnson discussed how he is approaching helping the Bears' QB presnap versus once the play has begun. The head coach elaborated:
Sometimes you get wrapped up when you’re in the multiple play call game, being in the perfect play... And really with him, it doesn’t matter so much what the play call is.
Promising fresh start for former USC quarterback
Coach Johnson would go on to say that even if the play call itself is not technically the best for the given situation or the most ideal for the scenario, Williams will still find a way to make something out of anything.
So far the USC legend is showing up and putting in the work in overtime with his NFL team. The challenge his current coach has is knowing when to scheme things open and when to just let his Heisman Trophy winner take over.
