Every situation for a student-athlete is different. For Chad Baker-Mazara, coming to USC presents a different challenge compared to what he experienced at Auburn. It is one, however, that the listed guard is embracing.

While speaking with reporters following the first open media practice since the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season, Baker-Mazara spoke on part of what coach Eric Musselman said to him that ultimately led to his coming to USC.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Baker-Mazara mentioned the connection with the national team. The senior also mentioned how prior matches against coach Musselman's Arkansas side gave him a good look at what to expect in the Trojan system.

Setting the X's and O's aspect aside for a moment, the senior brought up how coach Musselman is giving him a new perspective and goal to strive for. While not able to give specifics, it seems like the new push from Baker-Mazara is something of a different overall outlook that he feels that he would not have otherwise perceived if it weren't for his conversation with coach Musselman.

He did mention the desire to be challenged in a way that has not been presented to him beforehand. Coming to USC is giving the collegiate veteran a chance to learn in a new system and take something of a different approach.

Whether that is Baker-Mazara's mindset, preparation, or how he plays in the game itself in terms of something tactical, that is between him and coach Musselman for now. It is safe to say that he does have a newfound enthusiasm compared to what he experienced at Auburn.

Final year at USC gives Baker-Mazara a big opportunity

That is part of the positives and how the transfer portal can benefit student-athletes. Baker-Mazara offers a lot of versatility and a proven ability at this level of basketball. Now, he is in a program that he feels can get something different and the most out of him for his final year in the NCAA before setting his sights on making it as a pro in the NBA.

Coach Musselman's first job will be figuring out how to get this new-look Trojan team to mesh together. From the early, first impressions, things appear to be going well so far.
