USC football’s latest commit, Ty Buchanan, is an offensive lineman with the right attitude.

Make that 20 commits for USC football’s recruiting class of 2021.

On Thursday, three-star offensive lineman Ty Buchanan announced his commitment to the Trojans, starting off the month of October right for the Trojans.

“First off, I want to thank God for all my blessings and for giving me so many opportunities! I am truly blessed,” Buchanan wrote on Twitter while thanking his high school and the coaches who recruited him. “With all this being said I will be committing to the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA!”

What is USC football getting in Ty Buchanan?

Buchanan is the fourth offensive lineman the Trojans have added for 2021, but he’s the lowest-rated of the bunch. The 247Sports composite ranks him No. 964 nationally and No. 49 at offensive guard.

That’s not to say Buchanan is without his merits. The 6-foot-5, 280-pound prospect out of Corpus Christi has a solid foundation for USC to build on. He started out as a tight end so he brings a reasonable amount of athleticism to the table. His frame is ideal with plenty of room to grow. And his approach to playing

“That’s one of those things you can’t teach a kid how to be able to play with a chip on his shoulder,” Calallen offensive line coach Stephen Hrncir said. “It transfers into offensive line play really well, finishing blocks and extra effort kind of plays. Lots of kids don’t have that kind of mean streak and Ty has it.”

Buchanan will likely need time to develop, so it may be a while before Trojan fans see him on the field, but his presence, for now, is a plus simply on the numbers front. USC has to prepare for the graduations of Frank Martin, Liam Jimmons and Bernard Schirmer while knowing starters like Jalen McKenzie, Andrew Vorhees and Brett Neilon are eligible to depart for the NFL whenever they choose.

Even with last year’s six-man offensive line class, the depth in the trenches is not what it needs to be. Bringing in four additional prospects in 2021 will help greatly with that. Where Buchanan goes from there depends on his drive and USC’s coaches.
