Linebacker Porter Gustin remains out while cornerback Jack Jones and wide receiver Tyler Vaughns are banged up in the USC Football injury report for Dec. 12.

USC Football fans who hoped to see Porter Gustin return to the field for the Trojans’ bowl game may need to hold their breath. The junior outside linebacker remains in doubt as preparations for the Cotton Bowl began on Howard Jones Field.

Gustin did make it onto the field, but wearing a jersey and shorts while his teammates practice in full pads. While his foot was no longer in a cast, he did sport a boot protecting the toe he broke back in September and re-injured in November.

Head coach Clay Helton called Gustin “day-to-day” and “week-to-week,” noting that he has progressed but is still going through rehab. He has not been able to perform football movement at this point.

With about two and a half weeks until USC takes on Ohio State in Arlington, the clock is ticking on Gustin’s potential return to the field before the 2017 season comes to a close.

“We’ve still got some time but we’ll do what’s in his best interest,” Helton said.

Meanwhile a trio of Joneses are dealing with ankle injuries.

Wide receiver Velus Jones was pulled from Tuesday’s action after tweaking his ankle. He was seen limping heavily on the sidelines.

Finally, running back Ronald Jones II did not finish practice because of a similar concern, though Helton described it as “precautionary” shut down for the All-American back.

No timetable was given for any of the three to return from their respective ankle issues.

Adding to the worries at wide receiver, Tyler Vaughns was pulled from action due to a shoulder injury. The redshirt freshman fell hard while making a catch during 7-on-7 and immediately voiced his distress.
