Matt Boermeester, Rose Bowl Winning Kicker, Reportedly Under USC Investigation

USC football kicker Matt Boermeester has been suspended while being investigated for a “Code of Conduct” issue, Deadspin reported Tuesday.

A month ago, Matt Boermeester was the hero of the 2017 Rose Bowl after kicking the game-winning field goal in the final seconds against Penn State.

Now, his status with USC football is in doubt as the university investigates the kicker for a student-conduct issue.

Deadspin’s Samer Kalah reported Boermeester’s suspension on Tuesday night with a statement from USC which reads:

"The university is investigating a code of conduct issue with Matt Boermeester. Student disciplinary records and proceedings regarding any matter of student conduct are confidential and protected by law. While this student code of conduct issue is being investigated, the student will not be representing the university as a member of its athletic team."

There have been no details of what brought about the investigation into Boermeester, though Deadspin cited tips regarding an “incident involving Boermeester and his ex-girlfriend.”

The redshirt senior kicker is now suspended while the investigation unfolds, but there is no telling how long that may be.

Boermeester was 18 of 25 on field goal tries in 2016, including the Rose Bowl game-winner. His 98.1 success percentage on point-after tries was the highest by a USC kicker since Andre Heidari’s 100 percent mark in 2011.

With Boermeester out indefinitely, next up on the Trojans’ depth chart is Michael Brown. Both kickers were added as blueshirt counters, with Brown enrolling at USC in 2016 and counting towards the 2017 recruiting class. He redshirted and has four years of eligibility remaining.

It’s been just a few months since USC parted ways with three players — Osa Masina, Don Hill and Jabari Ruffin — over student-conduct issues. Masina is awaiting trial in Utah on sexual assault charges while Hill was expelled after he was implicated in another incident involving Masina. Ruffin was removed from the program this fall over an undisclosed violation.
