The USC track and field team started the Texas A&M 44 Farms Team Invitational with a strong entry in the weekend's competition. Racing against runners from TCU, Texas Tech, Notre Dame, and the hosts, it was the Trojans who saw three of their runners finish one, two, and three in the women's 200m event.
Madison Whyte earned the top spot with a 22.32 finish. Fellow teammate Dajaz Defrand wasn't too far behind with her time of 22.66. Less than a tenth of a second later, Jassani Carter finished the race at 22.75. This gave her an SB on the day. The full Cardinal and Gold podium was an excellent way for USC to kick things off for the current second-best women's team in the nation. Tiana Eyakpobeyan also finished with a PB. Her 23.09 finish was good for a fifth-place finish.
Whyte secured a PB with her Friday afternoon race in College Station. This also doubled (tripled) as a meet and facility record at E.B. Cushing Stadium. Carter, meanwhile, ran her season best during her third-place finish. Her personal best was also good enough to be the third-best time in USC athletic history.
Following the opening race, the USC track and field social media team shared a photo of the three top women's 200m finishers. All smiles and holding the peace sign, the three Trojans will look to continue their impressive form in their events.
Potential preview for USC track and field
Considering the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Rounds are set to also take place in College Station, the aforementioned names will look to repeat Friday's history again in late May en route to the NCAA Championships that will be held in Eugene, Oregon.
For now, Whyte holds the NCAA-best time in the women's 200m. This is a designation that she now firmly holds on to. At the Battle on the Bayou, she ran a 22.52 that saw her only lose out to Thelma Davies, who is currently a Tiger Olympians team member. With the current NCAA lead cemented for the time being by a USC track and field member, the Trojans will look to continue to dominate.
