If Week 1 of college football showed anything, it is that preseason rankings and projections are entirely meaningless. At best they are a guess. That is not to say that they do not have a place in the sport. After all, after months without any action, something has to serve as the fuel of debate to help fans during the lull days of the sports season.

After watching how the first set of games has unfolded, though, it is clear that USC is going to be a ranked team sooner rather than later. Perhaps when looking at how last season unfolded, there could be some legitimate reasoning as to why the Trojans were unranked.

There is certainly a valid argument when only looking at the past performances. Knowing what is known now, though, there are several teams that were overrated heading into the current season. Pair this knowledge with the improvement that was on display from the Trojans, and it should not take too long before USC finds itself in the Top 25.

Following the win over Missouri State, coach Lincoln Riley spoke on the Trojans not being ranked.

Comments from USC HC

As shared by the Big Ten Football account on X, coach Riley is not too concerned about being unranked; he stated:

"We're aware of it, but it doesn't matter where you start... This team has got big goals, and they're definitely capable of it."

Certainly after the opening win over Missouri State, USC does indeed look like a team that is ready to be a team that is closer to matching its status as a blue blood program.

Coach Riley has maintained the importance of having a program-wide strategy that will ensure that the Trojans will be able to play well for a long time to come. This sustainable emphasis likely plays a large part as to why there is not too much lost sleep over what the voters are voicing at the moment. As long as USC keeps compiling wins, they will be in excellent shape for when it matters.
