For a brief moment, it looks as if Georgia Southern was going to be able to pull off the impossible and actually beat USC in the Coliseum. Particularly after Waymond Jordan coughed the ball up on the opening drive and the Eagles' early touchdown, the thought of the worst was going through the minds of many Trojan fans.
This is where trust and faith in a special player's ability come into play. It is not uncommon for a coach to sit a running back after fumbling the ball and losing possession. Coach Lincoln Riley, however, did the opposite.
The Trojan HC immediately dialed up runs for Jordan and ended up seeing significantly more touches than Eli Sanders. Although USC was playing a G5 opponent, to an extent, coach Riley took a risk. Competitive sports are often more about the mental aspect and visuals than anything else. Sticking with Jordan and continuing to feature the running back is something that many coaches would not have done, particularly in such an emotionally charged game. After all, the Trojans not only have Sanders at RB, but King Miller saw some snaps and showed that he too is more than capable of rattling off big gains.
It is here that coach Riley and Jordan both deserve credit. The USC head coach displayed full trust in the Trojan newcomer. Jordan, on the other hand, did not allow the early, glaring mistake to compile. Instead, he ran for 167 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown.
Needed continued feature of USC offense
This is something positive that USC will not only need more of during the Big Ten portion of the schedule, but some would argue that the team actually needs a heavier dose of Jordan in the offensive game plan.
Depending on how the season goes and what Jordan continues to make from his opportunities, that moment and decision against the Eagles could end up proving to be a massively important moment for USC when looking back on the season.
