Trojan fans will always be grateful for what coach Pete Carroll did while at USC. In terms of one of the major 'what-ifs' in college sports, it is unknown but easy to guess what could have been had the NCAA not punished the program in the way in which it did.

For coach Carroll, he would soon find success with the Seattle Seahawks after leaving Los Angeles. Now with the Las Vegas Raiders, he is in something of an intriguing position.

Geno Smith is with the former Trojan HC, and it is a team that has some promising pieces, including rookie Ashton Jeanty. In part because of the division, not too many are optimistic about the Raiders' chances for the upcoming season. A reason that many doubt the ability to do well has less to do with the talent or areas that need to see an upgrade. Instead, many, for some unknown reason, believe that coach Carroll is not the right person for the job.

For some, age is too much of a factor at 73. Although, it must be noted, any and every clip with the Trojan icon has him running around, nearly engaging in Greco-style wrestling with his current players. Setting that aspect aside, consider that coach Carroll is in plenty good enough physical condition to do the job.

Reason to have full confidence in former USC HC

Coach Carroll is still as sharp and knowledgeable as they come. His experience and pedigree are an asset. He has seen it all and directly experienced all sides of the coin.

This is a Raiders team that does not have grand expectations. It is unreasonable to place something akin to a Super Bowl expectation on this team. What they need at the moment is someone who can get the most out of this roster and flip some of the penciled-in losses to wins. That is what they are getting with the former USC head coach, and that is what makes coach Carroll the most uniquely qualified person for the current Las Vegas position.
