It's been a busy day for Clay Matthews. Starting with his appearance at the NFL's Salute to Service event with USAA, the former Trojan was then on stage during the draft itself and made sure everyone knew who owned a certain rivalry.
Informing the people that he had just received urgent word from President Donald Trump, Matthews let it be known, after unwinding the delivered message for all to see, that 'The Bears still suck!' The Detroit-based crowd didn't seem to disapprove, as they erupted into cheers.
For all of the fans who like the old-fashioned rivalries and heated moments between certain teams, this was a throwback to a time when players would have strong disdain for some on a different team, depending on the extent of the bad blood.
Using the podium to remind Chicago, as Aaron Rodgers would say, who 'owns them' is only fitting when given the opportunity and something that many NFL fans would enjoy seeing more of. Going out of the way to remind people who has the edge between bitter foes is part of football's rich tradition.
USC collateral damage from draft
The issue now becomes who the current signal-caller for the Bears is. Caleb Williams, also a former Trojan, is now something of a victim as an innocent bystander. Knowing the level of competitiveness, it's safe to say that Chicago will try to find a way to strike back.
For today, Matthews and the Packers won on the day. And if the efforts of the product out of USC spark a renewed level of animosity among the NFC North teams for fans to enjoy, then it will have been well worth it.
