USC football will have a new home in 2028...and plenty of roommates

Well, it looks like SoFi Stadium is going to have a new resident.

USC will have to relinquish use of the Coliseum in 2028 for the Summer Olympics and will have to play their home games at SoFi Stadium. This arrangement should last for just the 2028 football season, but if UCLA moves to SoFi for the 2026 season as rumored, things could get quite stuffy in Inglewood.

Yeah. So, in 2028, SoFi is looking at having the Trojans, Bruins, Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers all in the same place for one season. If three is a crowd, what will four be?

Either way, this is good news for the people at SoFi Stadium because at least one of the college teams is guaranteed to draw a crowd for every home game. And while USC football should only be played at the Coliseum, I guess one season of something different isn't so bad. Plus, the high-level boosters will have access to some pretty nice amenities and suites, which could mean a nice financial windfall for the company.

USC's 2028 schedule still has a few slots to be filled, and the Trojans have just four home conference games that year (Penn State, Iowa, Nebraska and Purdue). The only non-conference game on the schedule is a home game against Fresno State. I wouldn't be surprised if USC tried to pick up a neutral-site game against a Power 4 opponent (maybe in Las Vegas) and add another non-conference, so the Trojans are just playing six home games at SoFi.

Of course, one of the "road" games is UCLA and another is Oregon, so USC could be in a position where  it is playing nine games in the Pacific Time Zone.

This was not an issue in 1984

One of the reasons why USC will be forced to relocate is because a new track is being installed at the Coliseum for the track and field events. This wasn't an issue the last time that Los Angeles hosted the Summer Olympics in 1984. That year, the Trojans played all their games at the Coliseum and went 9-3 with a Rose Bowl win over Ohio State.

The track is temporary and will be removed after the games end in late July, but the expected construction time to tear down the track will bleed into the football season, thus making the stadium unavailable.
