The USC Trojans are preparing for a short week as they get set to host the Northwestern Wildcats in their first home game at the L.A. Coliseum in over a month. USC enters the matchup ranked No. 19 in the College Football Playoff rankings, while Northwestern, sitting at 5-3, aims to secure bowl eligibility with a statement win.

This marks the second straight week in which the Trojans hold a clear talent advantage over their opponent. However, USC’s performance against Nebraska left much to be desired. Despite escaping with a win, the Trojans’ offense led by quarterback Jayden Maiava will need to show far more consistency and urgency if they hope to avoid another nail-biter this week.

The Trojans hold the edge over Northwestern in nearly every statistical category and remain unbeaten at home this season. The one factor that could complicate matters, however, is the schedule. Northwestern enters the matchup well-rested following a seven-point loss to Nebraska two weeks ago, while USC faces a quick turnaround with a short week leading into Friday night’s game.

Even with those factors in mind, USC should handle business against Northwestern. The Wildcats may have their moments and keep the game competitive at times, but if the Trojans execute a balanced offensive attack and generate consistent pressure defensively, the outcome should never truly be in question.
