The Trojans doubled down on improving their defensive line through the portal by adding Michigan State transfer Alex VanSumeren to team up with Penn State’s Zurich Fisher. The 300-pound defensive tackle started 24 games for the Spartans.
He tallied 53 tackles, ranking third on the team, with six coming in an early 2025 game against USC. Alex is a three-star transfer portal prospect and is expected to be an immediate contributor when he arrives, as the Trojans keep up their streak of productive Power Four starters from the portal for the 2026 squad. With these moves the Trojans have plenty of depth at the interior defensive line, with Jide Abisari and Jahkeem Stewart poised to be impact players at the position.
VanSumeren is a highly productive player, recording 19 run stops that would have ranked best on USC in 2025. Additionally, his experience is unmatched. As a full-time starter for the past two seasons, Alex knows how to deliver in the Big Ten, making him a valuable asset for a Trojans defense aiming to complement an elite offense in pursuit of a CFP berth.
The Trojans likely aren’t finished in the portal, but VanSumeren marks a perfect success rate for visitors on the opening weekend of the transfer window. USC keeps proving that defense is a priority and experience is a key factor when navigating the portal. For the Trojans, the incoming No. 1 recruiting class is great, but adding experience will make it even stronger.
When does the transfer portal close?
This is the final week of the transfer portal with all business to be completed by January 16. Unlike past seasons, there is just one transfer portal window in college football this season. USC has added six players through the portal and will likely continue to pursue targets until the window is closed.
