There are a couple of elements that are missing from modern-day tight ends. It's not a judgment, but for many who play the TE position, in reality, they serve as an additional slot wide receiver option. USC solidified the commitment of someone who can not only serve as a pass catcher but also enjoys being a part of the blocking scheme in the run game.
Coming off his senior season with Santa Margarita Catholic High School, Fisher Melton will soon be a TE option for the coach Lincoln Riley offense for the 2025 season. As shared by On3's WeAreSC writer Scott Schrader, the class of 2025 football player will be staying in California to continue his career.
In the post on X, Melton made it known how this is something of a dream come true for him. He not only grew up rooting for the Trojans, but his father had played before him as well. A local Southern California talent, the tight end will look to continue on his family's Cardinal and Gold legacy.
Prior to his commitment, Melton had interest from Georgia Tech, Miami, and the University of Chicago.
Watching him play, he does a lot of things well. He stands at 6’ 4" and does a nice job of using his size, both to make the catch and to gain more yards after the reception. He knows how to get into a window for his quarterback to find him and feels comfortable running the route tree.
Why USC fans will like having Melton on the roster
The old-school aspect showcases itself in two main ways. Firstly, Melton does not show any fear in running up the seam, anticipating immediate contact from an opposing player in coverage. He also can be seen cracking down on a defender in the run game. This physical nature of his game is an excellent part of his approach. The willingness to engage in the dirty work isn't something that can be seen or said of a lot of his contemporaries throughout the landscape of college football.
Melton will look to vie for playing time as a freshman. Anything can happen over the course of the regular season. For someone with a high football IQ and willingness to hit, coach Riley will have a strong option to turn to at TE.
