It may seem against the generally accepted conventional wisdom, but USC could conceivably end up playing in 12 personnel a little more often this season than what many are anticipating.
It is clear that the Trojans have a fantastic one-two punch in Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane. The tight end room is pretty impressive as well, though, with Lake McRee and Walker Lyons leading the way from the TE position.
Both enter the 2025 season with experience and familiarity in the system and with Jayden Maiava. In a college game that is often about being up-tempo and getting the ball into the hands of the wide receivers, it could end up being a trick up coach Lincoln Riley's sleeve that would allow for the Trojans to be able to have a certain level of advantage through this unique look.
As is, the opposing defense is going to have its hands full with Lemon and Lane. This could then potentially lead to McRee and Lyons being freed up to have more favorable matchups, particularly if the passing game is going and the other team is in a nickel or dime package.
To then see the two Trojan tight ends on the field at the same time would give the offense the ability to somewhat dictate terms and potentially force other teams to adjust to what they are doing.
Big help for USC offense
Especially with now being in the Big Ten, USC could greatly benefit from stealing a page out of the book of its newer conference counterparts. What this would also set up is the ability to run the ball or at least have more inherent plays that could lead to a run being called.
From that standpoint, especially, Trojan fans would love to see more 12 personnel from USC this season. When looking at the personnel, it is highly likely that the Cardinal and Gold fan base will receive its wish.
