A lot can happen in the NFL Draft, particularly during the later rounds. Teams will often mortgage a part of their future if it means being able to select someone this year who they feel can help them win games now. Once again, the Houston Texans did so, for the second time in this year's draft, solidifying another Trojan for their rookie class.
Woody Marks will be heading to Texas and will join coach DeMeco Ryans in his second year with the team. The now-former USC running back was selected with the 116th overall pick in the fourth round. Houston traded up, just as they had for Jaylin Smith the day before.
The organization traded away this year's sixth-round pick and next year's third-round pick. Giving up a position at a higher stage of the following draft shows how much they value adding him to the team. That can often be part of the maneuvering during this process for front offices. Giving up a higher selection and a lower selection to move up for somewhere more immediate allows the team to get someone on their board who they don't want to risk falling any further.
For the Texans, this meant not waiting around and ensuring that Marks would be added to their roster. He'll have a chance to line up in the backfield with CJ Stroud. That running back room currently has Joe Mixon leading the charge. The Texan fourth-rounder will have a chance to compete for the third-down back role.
Marks will bring a lot to the Texans RB room
Whenever he steps foot on the field, he'll be someone who can churn out yards and hold up his own in pass protection. Marks is also a threat to slip out of the backfield and turn a short pass into a larger gain. The all-around ability and power of him will allow him to get a healthy amount of touches this season in the NFL.
He is on a team that now has Calen Bullock and Smith, as mentioned earlier. Keeping track of all of the USC players who are active NFL players can be a lot. It's safe to say that Houston just became something of a priority for Trojan fans to monitor.
