Accomplishing something incredible takes continued, genuine effort. This is what it will take in order for USC to reclaim its spot among the top programs in the country. After a number of down years (still better than most of the rest of college football's), the staff has made a clear shift in their overall approach.
It's rare that an effort in something sees an immediate return. In the case of the Trojans, however, the work among high school athletes and showing what the program is about is already leading to a number of athletes eager to wear the Cardinal and Gold. This is evidenced by the top classes among the upcoming H.S. classes of 2026 and 2027. And like a true snowball effect, the momentum has resulted in an encouraging sign among a notable 4-star talent.
Talanoa Ili is a linebacker who has a strong level of interest from the likes of Oklahoma, Texas, Notre Dame, and Oregon, among others. According to On3's Chad Simmons, the LB is moving USC up his list of schools that he'll end up making his decision from.
Encouraging recognition from promising USC recruit
Pictures shared on X showed the contingency of the Trojans staff in Hawai'i making an effort to continue their relationship with Ili. In the post on social media by Simmons, the recruit mentioned:
"Everything changed after Chad Bowden became GM and really shifted the narrative to keeping the California kids home."
For those who have been paying attention to the program, this should be the best phrase to be uttered by a potential future Trojan. Since arriving from Notre Dame, Bowden has made it a point to improve in the high school ranks and, specifically, local recruiting.
In order for USC to even hope to meet the heights of past great teams, securing California and the top players from the island state of Hawai'i is a must. It's still early in the overall process. In the journey toward the ultimate return to the top, taking a moment to appreciate the checkpoints along the way is a must.
