Sometimes getting on the field via the path of least resistance is the best route for USC football newcomers. For Elijah Newby, this will mean transitioning from linebacker to defensive end. Luckily for the redshirt freshman, it won't be a completely brand new chance.

Speaking with reporters following Thursday's practice, Newby explained how he'll be leaning on his past experience from high school. 2025-2026 will be his second season on campus, but while answering questions, he elaborated on how already playing as a lineman will help:

"For the position switch, it's an opportunity. High school I got the chance to play both linebacker and end. Being switched over, I know I got the capabilities."

It's different going from the high school level to college. Still, Newby has the skill set and confidence in being able to make a difference on the defensive line. Even if it's a step up from his past H.S. years, there will be a level of confidence in him being familiar with the position.

Not starting entirely from scratch and having a going DE base will be critical for him heading into the upcoming season. Newby saw some action as a true freshman, but more will be expected of him in coach D'Anton Lynn's system. Having a strong spring and knowing over the summer that he will be asked to play as a defensive lineman will give him a lot of clarity when fall camp begins later on.

Coaches believe in USC football players' ability

The staff believes he has the size and tools to be a force in the trenches for the Trojans. Part of the advantage of knowing that he'll be a DE will allow him to bulk up. At the same time, his speed and burst will allow him to make plays in the backfield off the snap, giving him an advantage. He, therefore, won't need to add too many pounds in order to see consistent playing time.

Coach Lynn will look to get a couple more key stops this year. Having someone who can play multiple positions like Newby will be a great option for the coordinator to have. USC football believes they have the right person to take on the challenge of playing end within their defense.
