Maybe it will be a gradual, year-by-year process of the college football world as a whole righting the wrong done to USC. Yes, the sanctions had their intended effects. Slowly but surely, however, the program is starting to reemerge from the unjust repercussions that were meant to punish the Trojans for their success.
Last year, reunited with his Heisman Trophy, Reggie Bush was able to enter the Coliseum again and publicly be part of the Trojans' pre-game activities. He is still fighting for the wins and the 2005 BCS Orange Bowl Championship to be reinstated, but something else occurred this week that is amazing.
Bush can be seen on the CFB 26 Deluxe Edition cover of the game in USC apparel, as shared by On3's Hayes Fawcett. Certainly not an honor that even comes close to a Heisman or removing the asterisk that remains to this day by that 2004 season. It is something that would not have been pictured or foreseen even as little as two years ago.
For a game that is as widely known and that has a sizeable audience and therefore reflection on the sport in itself, to include someone that the NCAA actively tried to erase from its history and tear down can only be viewed as a positive step toward reconciliation from the CFB world.
From the reduced scholarships, the accomplishments being taken away, and the university not even being allowed to associate with Bush, things have come a long way since 2010.
Making up for past transgression against USC program
Still, the unquestioned harm that was done by the NCAA is continuing to be corrected, even a decade after their overreach of their multi-pronged punishment approach was originally issued.
In the grand scheme of things, this is entirely symbolic, being able to purchase Bush on the cover of a video game. It does show, however, how time has proved USC's case and that eventually, though it will be long overdue, the right result will be done.
