When looking at how players should be evaluated from high school, it becomes important to view someone's growth with a fresh set of lenses once an athlete joins the college program on campus. There have been several USC freshmen who have made a good initial impression.
While the college football fan base at large may not currently be as aware of some of the Trojan newcomers as those following the team on a daily basis, there are a couple of USC players who are going to be in a great position to contribute early on.
When looking at the recruiting classes, the Trojans have the top classes in question for the upcoming years. That is a significant development.
It needs to be remembered, though, that when someone leaves high school, there is something of a blank slate that is needed when evaluating the new talent.
Belief in current USC approach
Having a coaching staff that is willing to give everyone a new start at the beginning of training camp is telling of a good collection of people who believe in the legwork that has been done on the trail and through the recruiting process. Teams often claim to give everyone equal opportunity, supposedly not caring about seniority. To see this Trojan staff truly giving everyone a legitimate chance to earn reps and potentially see playing time in the fall is a great sign and speaks well for what is happening in Troy.
It should not come as a surprise if the likes of Corey Simms, Floyd Boucard, and Alex Graham have a strong early role for USC as freshmen.
There are a number of options that have the potential to have a long, successful career at USC. Watching how they perform as freshmen is an exciting aspect to keep tabs on as the season unfolds.
