It goes without saying that there is never a good time for an injury. USC redshirt senior Prophet Brown has suffered a non-contact injury. As shared by USCFootball.com's Chris Treviño, the defensive back could be seen on the sidelines during practice on crutches.
The exact nature of the injury has not been shared. It is not, however, believed to be a setback that will force him to miss the entirety of the season.
Brown was expected to be the opening starter in the nickel role. About to start the year in coach D'Anton Lynn's second season with the program, his veteran experience and carryover were going to be important parts to lean on for the defensive coordinator.
The fact that a tear has not been reported and the fact that the staff has expressed optimism as to Brown's return is encouraging. It will, naturally, come down to how Brown's rehab process works out for him. At this time, however, there is not a timetable for his potential return.
Hopeful prognosis for USC DB
The part that is lost is the chance to use the opening non-conference games as an opportunity to work on the players' roles in the system and to gain a full head of steam as the Trojans then prepare for Big Ten play. Based on what is being shared at the moment, there does appear to be a great chance for Brown to be able to return when the conference games begin.
Because of Brown's skill level and his veteran experience, when he is cleared to resume practicing again, it will take him less time than others to be able to seamlessly step back into the defense.
In the meantime, USC fans will hope for a speedy and full recovery for Brown, who, it appears, has avoided the worst-case scenario from this setback.
