USC takes on Michigan this week in one of the most highly anticipated Big Ten clashes of the season. The Reign of Troy staff share their predictions below.

This game would’ve been much easier to predict if USC hadn’t fallen to Illinois in the fashion they did. The truth is, I’ve picked USC to win every game so far this season but this matchup against Michigan feels like a turning point, a moment that could define whether USC’s season will be considered a success.

Over the past two years, USC has struggled to close out tight games consistently. Michigan presents another test of that weakness. It hasn’t mattered whether the offense has been explosive or the defense has generated strong pressure when the moment demands composure, this team has too often come up short.

That said, I expect USC’s offense to find its rhythm, and I anticipate noticeable improvement in the secondary. The team appears to be getting healthier at just the right time, which is encouraging. Still, Michigan is built for these kinds of battles. They’re a tough, well-tested team that knows how to stay in games deep into the fourth quarter.

This is a defining moment not just for the Trojans’ season but for Lincoln Riley’s tenure at USC. Losing simply cannot be an option when the clock hits zero at the Coliseum on Saturday night.

Prediction: USC 28, Michigan 24

This is a game that USC will either use to show that the program is indeed headed in the right direction or one that confirms all of the criticisms and concerns among those doubting whether coach Lincoln Riley can install a winning culture in Troy.

Even in the worst-case scenario, however, it is doubtful that the run defense will be nearly as vulnerable as was seen against Illinois.

Michigan, granted, will attempt to execute a similar game plan, as that better suits their strengths. Expect the coach D'Anton Lynn unit to make at least some progress through their bye week efforts and for the offense to be able to make enough plays to secure the win at the Coliseum.

Prediction: USC 31: Michigan 24
