Top USC Trojans transfer portal target reveals when he wants to commit
By Evan Desai
USC Football wants UNC Defensive Back Tony Grimes in the transfer portal. So much that they're hosting him on a visit this weekend. Grimes was a five-star recruit coming out of the 2020 recruiting class (all recruiting ratings and rankings in article are as of 247Sports). The timing of his visit is perfect, as he's revealed that he wants to commit next week:
Grimes has not passed the eye test in every possible way in his three-year college football career, but he's still put up solid numbers. In the past two years, he's racked up 83 tackles and 16 PDs. He's coming off of his lesser statistical year of the past two right now, but he still had 36 tackles and seven PDs this past season.
Here's the reality: Regardless of one's opinion on whether Grimes has lived up to being the No. 3 cornerback in the class of 2020, DBs with 16 PDs in the past two years have at least been serviceable--especially whent hey have the talent that Grimes proved he had in the high school ranks.
He was the No. 28 overall player in that class--he has elite talent to go with serviceable numbers. Acquiring him in the transfer portal would be a MASSIVE upgrade over each of the two SC defensive backs that are leaving via the transfer portal in Jayden Williams and Xavion Alford.

USC Football needs Tony Grimes with Mekhi Blackmon entering the 2023 NFL Draft.
With USC Football's best defensive back gone in Blackmon, the Trojans need an impact addition in the defense backfield, and Tony Grimes would be one of those guys who would be an impact addition.
This is the same player who led the ACC in PDs in 2021; proving the talent that he showed coming out of Princess Anne (Virginia), where he was the No. 1 player in the state for the 2020 recruiting class. Domani Jackson, Calen Bullock, and Grimes would be a good start in building a winning DB room for 2023.
