The five most important USC football players in 2024
By John Fye
No 5. – Running back Woody Marks
Jo'Quavious "Woody" Marks transferred to USC football from Mississippi State in December. The senior running back appeared in 45 games for the Bulldogs over four seasons. He was among Starkville's most talented football players but limited in group production due to a pass-happy offensive approach.
Marks stuck with Mississippi State following Mike Leach's passing but was further limited by a running back committee approach under Zach Arnett. In Los Angeles, Marks is the unheralded starting running back and successor to MarShawn Lloyd.
The Trojans will rely on Marks for pass-blocking and the rushing attack. Senior Bowl officials recently lauded Marks for his pass-protecting ability.
No. 4 – Defensive end Nate Clifton
USC football's first step to turning its defense around is putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Cue Vanderbilt transfer Nate Clifton to lead USC's effort in 2024.
Clifton's 65.8 PFF grade in 2023 isn't anything to get excited about, but fans must consider he played for the Commodores. Vanderbilt has made strides under Clark Lea, but its program remains an SEC cellar dweller. In Los Angeles, Clifton will play with better talent, including nose tackle Bear Alexander. Thus, we expect the 6-5 and 250-pound defender to make a significant impact in 2024.
The Trojans need Clifton to make an impact to chase a College Football Playoff berth. They'll also need impacts from our next pair of most important players.
