According to Bleacher Report, former Georgia running back Herschel Walker is ranked above Ohio State legend Archie Griffin as the greatest college football player ever. Walker was undoubtedly a college football beast, finishing his career as a three-time Unanimous All-American and 1982 Heisman Trophy winner. The former Bulldog also sits ahead of Griffin in all-time rushing yards (5,259).
Griffin's case for No. 1 all-time is solid. The former Buckeye legend was a two-time Unanimous All-American and the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner. However, Walker compiled better ground statistics in three seasons versus Griffin's four in the NCAA. The now dumbfounded Donald Trump advocate also led Georgia to a de facto national championship in 1980.
USC Legends named to Bleacher Report's Top 30 list
Former Trojan running back Marcus Allen is ranked the eighth greatest college football player ever. The college and pro football Hall of Famer achieved one of the greatest single seasons in history, rushing for 2,342 yards in 1981. Allen finished the year with 2,683 all-purpose yards, the Maxwell and Camp awards, and the Heisman Trophy.
Allen ranks 42nd in all-time college football rushing yards with 4,682. That number would be larger, but the USC great played fullback in his freshman season in Troy. Allen still rushed for 879 yards as a fullback and moved to tailback for his sophomore season. Moreover, Allen achieved one of the most significant NFL careers among all college football legends listed on Bleacher Report's ranking.
O.J. Simpson is also listed in the top 30 greats.
O.J. Simpson is one of the most controversial figures of the last three decades. Few advocates for the now-deceased convicted felon exist, but his college football career was unquestionably remarkable.
Simpson led the NCAA in rushing in both seasons with the Trojans. His 1,543 rushing yards in 1967 were vital to the Trojans winning the national championship. Simpson is also remembered for his 64-yard touchdown run that clinched the 1967 Victory Bell game.
The college and pro football Hall of Famer followed up an incredible first season in Southern California with 1,880 rushing yards in 1968. The efforts earned him a two-time Unanimous All-American selection and the 1968 Heisman Trophy. Ultimately, O.J. was a terrible person, but his on-field heroics earned him a spot on Bleacher Report's list.
One former Trojan who was snubbed on the top-30 list
Fans who watched Reggie Bush play football will agree he's one of the most dynamic players ever. The former USC great was a human highlight reel and COG to the Trojans dynasty years under Pete Carroll.
Bush finished his collegiate career with 3,169 rushing yards and 25 rushing touchdowns. Neither metric is significant compared to the NCAA's all-time rushing leaders, but USC fans know Bush was much more than a running back. The recently-reinstated Heisman Trophy winner accumulated 4,470 yards from scrimmage, including 2,218 yards in 2005.
Only Barry Sanders (1988) and Marcus Allen (1981) achieved better all-purpose seasons among all Heisman winners. Bush also finished his NCAA career with 1,522 kick return and 559 punt return yards.
Reggie Bush belongs on any greatest college football players list. He put up incredible numbers during a pass-happy era of college football and while sharing the backfield with LenDale White. Bush also led USC to multiple championships and the college football's first dynasty of the millennium.
