It will be difficult to find someone more centered than Jonah Monheim on the board of this year's NFL Draft. A lot of decisions by GMs and scouting departments will come down to how the individual meetings with players went. If there is someone who carried themselves better, then full credit to them. As USC fans will know after seeing him for five years with the Trojans, the offensive lineman speaks as thoughtfully and eloquently as anyone.
He played at every position on the line except left guard while in college. Most of his experience was at tackle; however, he made a switch for his senior season. The transition was part of a thought-out plan of putting him in the best position to succeed at the next level. It was also what the offense needed for the 2024 season.
His increased leadership and vocal presence made and will allow him to be an ideal center. Naturally, there was something of an adjustment period as a newly minted center, and he'll continue to learn the intricacies of the position, as will everyone else. Considering what teams are looking for, someone is getting an excellent pick in what is expected to be toward the later rounds of this year's draft.
Monheim is an intelligent and calculated player. That, coupled with his power and strength, allows him to be a true warrior in the trenches. In a further tell of his upside, he has played at multiple line positions before. While his focus will be as a C, teams will enjoy having someone who could fill in anywhere as needed, in the event of injuries as they happen throughout the season.
Continued correct approach will set Monheim up for success
While the rest of the football world continues to become acquainted with known Trojans, his pre-draft press moments took some people by surprise. Followers of the USC football team know that this is how Monheim approaches all aspects of his life. The NFL prospect gave the following insight into how he's approaching this process:
"Have that big picture sense, but also just live in the present moment. Take it day by day."
Not allowing any single aspect to become too large or allowed to overshadow anything else, the Southern California native knows that regardless of where he ends up, the process afterward will be the same. Being drafted is only the first part of being an NFL player. He will continue to keep his head down and work on all areas of his game.
When the announcement does come, it will be a great moment and representative of the type of people that coach Lincoln Riley enjoys working with. Development along with a continued hunger to get better, are qualities of Monheim that will serve him at the next level, as they did at USC.
