Oftentimes winning games actually comes down to 'beating yourself.' In other words, a dumb penalty or especially egregious turnover at the wrong time can often prove to be the undoing. This becomes particularly true when compiled over the course of four quarters. A seemingly insignificant mistake early on can end up having massive ripple effects later on.

This is arguably the main aspect that USC fans are looking to avoid in 2025. If the Trojans and any of the upper Big Ten teams go toe-to-toe and the opponent on the day just happens to make one more play in an otherwise good game, that would be the type of result that most USC fans would be able to live with.

If, however, some of the aspects that can only be described as self-inflicting wounds end up costing the win, then a lot of the same criticisms that were prevalent last year will become only that much louder this season.

Being able to stay competitive often does not involve the need to make big splashy plays. Those, of course, are what end up on highlight reels. Most times, it is far more important to pick up a short conversion to extend a drive and to get off the field on third down on the other side of the ball.

Important distinction needed from USC

More importantly, good teams are disciplined and find ways to execute even in the face of adversity. Most believe that this Trojan roster, particularly on defense, is improved from last year. In order for that belief to be solidified now, USC needs to show that next progression in development.

For this team to truly be a College Football Playoff contender, it will need to start showing elements of being a good team. There is not too much room for debate or discussion in this area. While that may or may not necessarily mean wins, the way in which USC competes this year will be extremely telling as to what the immediate future in Troy looks like.
