It could be said that there is an element of fate and destiny for USC. After all, the Trojans have someone named 'Thanos' on the roster. When taking a look at the defensive line and the number of players that will look to clog up the trenches, the defensive line for USC is going to be impressive for the Trojans.
As shared on X by Shotgun Spratling, defensive end coach Shaun Nua shared what he is hoping to see from his unit in 2025. The DE coach mentioned the desire to see "more negative plays" from the Trojans this year.
This is an important distinction. A shift in terms of the approach can end up making a world of difference for a defense. The best units find a way to essentially attack. Rather than reacting and looking to only minimize any gains, the best defenses are able to set the tone and establish their will on the game.
Being able to get into the backfield and force the opposing offense off-script can be incredibly valuable. Force enough long-yardage situations and three-and-outs, and it essentially functions as a turnover, giving USC the potential to capitalize more often.
Particularly for a game that is slanted toward the offense, to then have the bodies and mindset of wanting to turn the tables in favor of the defense is exactly what the Trojans need as the start to the season approaches.
Important aspect to monitor for USC
For a unit that has often been criticized in Los Angeles, USC is in a different position compared to past years. While the threat of the run is always going to be there, defenders knowing when the passing situations are and being able to pin their ears back can often lead to a lot of good things happening.
USC has needed to show improvement on defense. Based on what is coming out of preseason camp, the Trojans are well on their way to making that a reality.
