It is known that Ohio State will be able to be a national contender once again. Now in the Big Ten, USC is in a conference that has some good teams at the top, like the Buckeyes. As one goes through the list of teams, however, there are certain programs that are not quite at the quality of OSU, but they can still prove to be a difficult matchup for anyone in the nation.

The words that should come to mind for many BIG teams are grit and toughness. Even in the event of their not being able to be a true College Football Playoff contender, the likes of Iowa and Rutgers do an excellent job of at least making life difficult.

While it would have been ideal, in theory, for the conference to be forced to adjust to the Trojans, it has been instead USC that is making the needed changes to better match the style of play in the Big Ten.

Credit has to be given here. Many would choose to double down, fearing the prospect of changing a philosophy. Now, USC has built a roster that it believes can compete in the trenches.

Being able to match the size and physicality of others is something that will pay dividends for the Trojans in the years to come.

Return to needed aspect at USC

Think back to the great past Trojan teams. USC was able to run the ball at will, and they always sent a statement on defense, making it incredibly difficult for the opposing offense to even think about gaining a yard.

Being in the Big Ten is proving incredibly useful for USC in the sense that it is essentially forcing the Trojans to return to their roots. Even in the event of the season not being as great as some would hope, if USC can show the ability to match some of the grit and toughness, then that alone could be enough for Trojan fans to be invested in how the program is currently approaching aspects.
