Being in the Big Ten will allow USC to be in contention to make the College Football Playoff on an annual basis. While the conversations continue as to how slots will be allocated, for the time being, there are any number of scenarios that could play out that end up seeing multiple teams from either the BIG or SEC.
No matter which option is ultimately decided on, USC will be able to always find an avenue into the CFP. That possibility is extended by virtue of now being in the Big Ten, versus had they stayed in the Pac-12. In that scenario, they would have more or less needed to win the conference in order to secure safe passage into the playoffs.
Now, there could be anywhere from four to five schools that make it, depending on how the season shakes out.
Of course the Trojans will need to have a significantly better season in order to truly enter the conversation. Projecting ahead, however, there is a lot of reason to believe that USC will be able to be in those types of discussions shortly.
New reality for USC
Being in a competitive Big Ten will make it difficult. There aren't ever going to be too many seasons that have 'easy' matchups.
The benefit of that, though, is that a good year from the BIG can see the Trojans sneak in. Looking even more optimistically toward the future, a good season by the Trojans would have the Cardinal and Gold comfortably as one of the higher seeds.
Among all of the concerns about the program. There is a path for USC moving forward to be in the postseason and make a run for another championship. It is something that has a better chance of happening by virtue of being in the Big Ten.
